Lyrics of the Day

“When I think of those East End lights, muggy nights
Curtains drawn in the little room downstairs
Prima Donna Lord you really should have been there
Sitting like a princess perched in her electric chair
And it’s one more beer and I don’t hear you anymore
We’ve all gone crazy lately
My friends out there rolling round the basement floor

And someone saved my life tonight, sugar bear
You almost had your hooks in me didn’t you dear
You nearly had me roped and tied
Altar bound, hypnotized
Sweet freedom whispered in my ear
You’re a butterfly
And butterflies are free to fly
Fly away, high away, bye bye

Never realised the passing hours of evening showers
Slip noose hanging in my darkest dreams
I’m strangled by your haunted social scene
Just a pawn out-played by a dominating Queen
It’s four o’clock in the morning
Damn it, listen to me good
I’m sleeping with myself tonight
Saved in time, thank God my music’s still alive

And someone saved my life tonight, sugar bear
You almost had your hooks in me didn’t you dear
You nearly had me roped and tied
Altar bound, hypnotized
Sweet freedom whispered in my ear
You’re a butterfly
And butterflies are free to fly
Fly away, high away, bye bye

And I would have walked head on into the deep end of the river
Clinging to your stocks and bonds
Paying your H.P. demands forever
Coming in the morning with a truck to take me home
Someone saved my life tonight, someone saved my life tonight
Someone saved my life tonight, someone saved my life tonight
Someone saved my life tonight
So save your strength and run the field you play alone

Someone saved, someone saved, someone saved my life tonight
Someone saved, someone saved, someone saved my life tonight
Someone saved, someone saved, someone saved my life tonight”

Someone Saved My Life Tonight, Elton John

Trip to Brighton in Pictures

A proper welcome to Brighton - lunch at a pub - fish and chips and mushy peas. Delicious.

One of many adorable streets in Brighton

The Royal Pavilion, George IV's party house. No seriously. How else do you think Brighton got its amazing reputation for being such a fun town?

Seagulls, Brighton's bitchiest residents. They will stalk and attack for food. Saw it happen...beware of these shady bitches

Brighton is also known as the gay mecca in England and there are gay pride flags everywhere. Between the hills and the general relaxed energy of the city, it actually feels quite a bit like San Francisco

The Brighton Pier

Brighton Beach, cool and overcast but damnit the English are still enjoying themselves!

Carousels on the beach

Brighton is also full of adorable old pubs like this one

a pub with piss pots hanging from the ceiling. Love.

In case you were wondering Brighton has excellent cupcakes...

and even better sangria

I heart Brighton. Can't wait to go back.

Girl’s Night in Brighton

Last night I had an official girl’s night with my friend Stephanie and it was exactly what the doctor ordered.

It started with a proper trip to a British pub where I actually drank cider and (gasp!) enjoyed it. As I’ve made clear numerous times, cocktails are my drink of choice, but when in Brighton…so I gave it an honest go, and I must say it was delicious. I’m sure to actual beer and cider afficianados it’s nothing but a girly, fizzy drink much in line with a cocktail, but technically, it is cider, Kopparberg Mixed Fruit Cider to be exact. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to find it in the States but if I’m in a pub that can’t make what I would normally order, this cider will fit the bill just fine.

After drinks we moved on to a full on girl’s night in – dinner and a movie. But not just any movie. Dirty Dancing featuring my other “husband” Patrick Swayze to be exact – the ultimate swoon inducing movie that never gets old and that every girl I know can quote from memory. In case you weren’t aware Dirty Dancing, chocolate cake, and white wine do in fact make a perfect girl’s night in. If we’d braided each other’s hair and had a pillow fight the stereotype would have been complete. All in all, an excellent welcome to Brighton.

Today is work at the office like a grown up, tourist picture taking, and tapas and cocktails with friends and coworkers. Not too bad a schedule for a work trip and quite a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of Paris. Pictures to come!

Off to Brighton

I’m going to an English speaking country! I’m going to an English speaking country! Why am I this excited?!

Oh lovely England, how I have missed you. I’m only passing through London for but a few minutes, during which my heart will quietly be breaking into a million pieces in the train station, but at least I’m going to England. Brighton to be exact, where I get to see one of my favorite people and do some work and make some money.

I’m hoping despite having to work that I will be able to see enough to really get an idea of all Brighton has to offer. It sounds like an amazing little town and I’m a bit worried the relaxed beach town feel of it all will make me want to transfer offices. But I must return home to New York City. I must, I must, I must.

But first it’s Brighton, then it’s Brest, then my last official weekend in Paris which I have a feeling will do everything in its power to make me want to stay. Fabulous food, friends, and cocktail drinking has that power. Thank God all those things exist in New York.

So here’s to one last week of adventures before my return to the big bad city where the possibilities truly are endless, forever intimidating, and completely addictive.  Only one more week New York, get ready.
